Furniture Design With Feng Shui And Other Asian Themes

european bedroom furniture

For many years now, Asia has been the leading designer in many applications. In the past, they have had superior technology and design for electronics, and they have produced many of the best selling, most reliable cars on the road. With such innovative minds and high work ethics, Japan and China have led the way in many fields, so it should come as no surprise that the latest area in which their traditions have become prevalent is home design.

Two very distinct decorating styles have come from Japan in recent years, with hints here and there from China and other Asian cultures also infringing on the styles popular in American society. You can trace back the fascination to the art of the dragon, the artistic language (all written in symbols rather than characters as with many languages), and other such influences. It began with the fringe of American society, with youths getting tattoos and body art in Asian styles, and now it has progressed into a way of life and overall home design.

Minimalism has long been a theme of Japanese and other Asian design. In fact, many traditional Asian homes do not have furniture as American and European homes do. Instead, mattresses lay on the floor, and seating at mealtime is pillows around a table no higher than an American coffee table. Homes are small, and one room may be used for several functions, much like an efficiency apartment in the United States. While still artistic, the beauty in the few furnishings kept is their sharp angles, basic colors, and pure functionality. American design has begun to copy this trend, reverting to minimalist furniture design, without the large cushions, ornate decoration, and imposing size. In some homes, less furniture is used altogether to mimic the Asian cultures.

One specific design theme that has become quite prevalent in American society is Feng Shui. There is more to this than just a home décor style – Feng Shui is a way of life. It is about enlightenment and the ability to find inner peace. Feng Shui is using design as a way to strengthen, enlighten and protect an environment.

Interestingly enough, the colors most often associated with Feng Shui are black and red, with some burnt orange or yellow and deep brown mixed in. These colors have long been shunned in American design because black is thought to be a depressing color. While red has been thought to incite anger, many Feng Shui consultants recommend red to produce a protective and inspiring environment. It is believed that minimalist design used in combination with appropriate colors and the addition of the correct décor can produce a sense of peace and enlightenment.

A brief study of Asian cultures can assist in building an idea of where the future of design is headed. For many years companies such as Sony and Toyota were trend setters for the Western Industrial World. Design is one more aspect in which you can expect to see the West following the lead of Eastern examples for a long time to come.

Bedroom Furniture in Italy – Molto Bella!

metal bedroom furniture

Italy is a leader in fashion and design, second only to France and the Parisian shopping district that is the fashion capital of the world. When trends are set and forwarded to New York, they come from one of these two locations. That includes not only clothing but home and furniture designs as well. In order to be hip and in the know, it’s important for designers in the United States to make pilgrimages abroad and see what the latest and greatest offerings are across the Atlantic. In terms of bedroom furniture, Italy has turned to the simplistic use of platform beds, which are modern and basic, with sleek lines and sharp angles.

In today’s society, people change their minds frequently and want instant gratification. That’s true the world over, even in places like Italy where the lifestyle is a little slower paced and less rushed. That means that, if someone wants their furniture to last through the changes in trends and personal style, it is essential for the pieces to be as generic as possible. Contemporary beds designed out of Italy are being manufactured this way specifically for such a purpose. Of course, because the furniture is meant to last through numerous redecorations and for many years ahead, the beds produced here are of the highest quality. At the same time, Italians are frugal and won’t spend more than necessary, looking for the best value for their buck.

Of course, in Italy just as in many European nations, the apartments or “flats” as they are called are much smaller than what people are used to in the United States, so furniture has to accommodate the space available. This leads to combination pieces like bookcase headboards, which offer a place to store books and other important items that need to be accessible while not taking up extra space. It will also grace the head of the bed with style that reflects personal taste and a sense of self through the items that are chosen for display.

The trundle day bed is especially popular when it comes to roommates sharing one of these small flats, most of which are no bigger than the living rooms in a typical American home. This allows for seating on the sofa bed portion during the day, which is transformed into a bed at night, as well as a second bed that can be put away during the day to clear up more floor space.

Even in larger houses, rooms are not as spacious as those in North America, so king sized furniture is not the best option. Instead, Italians are more likely to purchase queen wood beds, choosing wood because of its durability and stylistic appeal. And, in order to provide a very basic canvas upon which to build a new design or theme, many Italians will take advantage of the plainness of platform beds. This creates the opportunity to quickly wipe the slate clean and start anew without spending a fortune on new furniture with each whim.

How to Choose a Jewelry Box

girl bedroom furniture

It’s that time of year when a young man’s fancy turns to, “What am I gonna get my girl for Christmas?!”  While jewelry is the typical choice, a jewelry box can be an equally pleasing gift.  It’s a little out of the ordinary, but buying your special someone a jewelry box shows that you’ve put a little extra effort into her gift.

A couple of things to remember:  First, much like jewelry, this is an area where quality counts.  A cheap, flimsy box with the wrong kind of lining can actually make jewelry tarnish faster.  You want to find a sturdy box, preferably solid wood, with a fabric lining.  There are also smaller boxes of glass or ceramic that might be good for teens, but buying anything other than wood for a woman’s large collection of jewelry is just asking for trouble.

Second, don’t limit yourself to the boxes carried by the jewelry store where you bought her last piece of jewelry.  There are many woodworkers all over the United States who are handcrafting jewelry boxes.  These boxes are usually sold through local gift stores and not through jewelry store chains.  In addition, art galleries often have beautiful boxes, and of course you can find them online.

But what kind of box should you get?  There are still many options available among the styles of wooden jewelry boxes, jewelry chests and jewelry racks.  Just answer these three questions to find that perfect box for your perfect mate:

How much jewelry does she have?

A big collection of smaller pieces like earrings and rings calls for a large box with several smaller compartments — think two or three drawers with dividers inside.  A smaller collection might benefit from a jewelry rack instead of a box.  A jewelry rack can be placed on a dresser or hung on a wall to save space.  Some racks revolve to make access to jewelry easier.  Even if the her jewelry collection grows later on, a jewelry rack will come in handy for her favorite — and thus, most often worn — pieces.

What type of jewelry will she put in it?

If she has plenty of necklaces and just a few earrings you could get by with a necklace rack to hang necklaces and a small box for the earrings.  Having chunkier bracelets and pins, however, means that a box with larger, more open compartments may be in order.  Many jewelry boxes now have areas for specific types of jewelry: soft slots for rings, side compartments to hang necklaces and bracelets, even long compartments to lay out watches.

How do you want the box to fit in with the home’s other furniture?

Most people make the mistake of thinking that a jewelry box always has to match the furniture in the room.  When we show customers the exotic wood jewelry boxes in our stores, many of these customers inevitably say, “But my bedroom furniture is Oak…that box won’t match!”  When you choose a box that accents your furniture instead of matching it, you allow the craftsmanship of the box and the beauty of the wood to stand on its own. The box becomes a showpiece in the room instead of blending into the other woodwork.  Also, remember that the jewelry box you buy today can be a timeless display of craftsmanship that passed on to future generations as an heirloom.

One more thing:  It’s bad luck to give someone an empty box as a gift.  Adding a new piece of jewelry to the inside of the box will make your gift complete!

The Elegance of Amish Furniture

baby bedroom furniture

The Amish have a worldwide reputation for crafting beautiful and high-quality solid wood furniture. Since the Amish use only solid wood, they produce furniture that is both strong and durable, built to last for many generations. Not only do they use the best quality wood, but their workmanship is unequaled. Amish furniture certainly stands out in a modern world where nearly every product on the market is mass-produced. The Amish craft these high-quality products, not so much because of personal pride, but more of a way of worshipping their God through action.

Amish craftsmen are particular in selecting the right wood for their projects. Even though oak and quartersawn oak are mostly used, there are also pieces available in cherry, maple, hickory, black walnut, cedar, and even pine. With its beautiful grain lines and honey coloration, oak has become widely distributed in the United States and Canada. But a craftsman might choose cherry when producing a Queen-Anne-style piece. The lovely scent of cedar makes it a great choice for making storage chest for clothing. Notable for their extreme hardness and light coloring, hickory and maple are two other popular choices.

Amish furniture designs range from artfully simple to ornately curved, with the most recognizable styles being Mission, Shaker, and Queen Anne. Other common styles of Amish furniture include: Traditional/Heritage, Contemporary, Bavarian, Bunker Hill, Carlisle, Hampton, McCoy, Modesto, Slat Mission, Shaker Hill, Spring Hill, Rio Grande, Royal Mission, West Lake, Southwestern, Rustic, Cottage, and Beachfront. For a simple square design, look for styles such as Mission and Shaker; others, such as Queen Anne and Bunker Hill, offer much more curve and ornamentation. Styles will vary from area to area; however, most furniture is made by Amish woodworkers from the Lancaster and Indiana communities. With each woodworker adding his own individual touch to his furniture, each finished piece is unlike any other.

Whatever room you need to furnish—bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room, or home office—there are a wide variety of Amish pieces to choose from. The most popular items tend to be beds, dressers, and dining room tables. Whatever the room, a matching set will complete a distinctive room décor. More unique pieces include heirloom-quality baby cribs and rocking chairs. Outdoor pieces for your patio or deck are also now available. Whatever your needs, there is definitely something for everyone.

Despite the popularity of their furniture, the Amish remain free from electricity, relying on diesel generators to power pneumatic or hydraulic tools to mill and construct their fine pieces. Diesel generators remain under Amish control, which correlates with a belief system that sees electricity as being supplied and controlled by the outside world. What’s nice about the generators is that they allow more time for the final finish detail work to be done by hand. This also gives a craftsman more time to handpick each piece of wood so that the colors and wood grains work together to create and eye-pleasing effect. When formal schooling is completed, a father will train his son in all the intricacies of woodworking, thereby passing his expertise on to the next generation.

Amish furniture used to only be available in antique stores and local shops. But today many of these shops are online and thus Amish furniture has become accessible to the world. Now “English” businessmen either buy directly from the Amish and do their own distributing, or they work with them to establish and manage an online storefront.

Keeping Your Home Sparkle Clean

european bedroom furniture

An executive feels peaceful and relaxed when he/she enters home after 16hours of hectic work, if kept tidy, serene and airy with fragrance. The teenager gets the atmosphere to study and concentrate if his/her room is in order and well kept. The home maker will have a sigh of relief when she enters the clean, dry, odourless kitchen early in the morning.

All these positive vibrations at home are possible only when the entire house is kept spotlessly clean.. The prerequisites for maintaining the house well are optimum usage of moving space as well as an intelligent arrangement of utility articles. There has to be a system of piling up disposable articles like mineral water bottles, plastic bags, newspaper/magazines etc., Today’s modern flat living culture , garbage and kitchen waste are also to be tackled on a day to day basis.

Let us go segment by segment. If we take the Hall, that is, drawing room or living room, the floor to be broomed and mopped every day. Sofa sets, carpets, electronic items like TV, music system etc be vacuum cleaned once in a week. The upholstery and curtains are to be changed once a month, by having another set washed or dry cleaned ready. The ceiling fans, glass windows, mirrors, and glass doors are to be cleaned every week.

The furniture is to be cleaned with dry cloth or with solutions meant for cleaning wooden articles. There is an excellent view across the gardens to the rose parterre and down to the main lawn. The dinning room regularly used for dinner parties and receptions. This room is used for formal luncheons and dinners.

The Drawing Room is used for most official entertaining including important visitors, diplomatic callers and small receptions. The drawing room is one of the most used rooms in the house, hosting many receptions, pre-dinner drinks, and meetings. The Drawing Room is the venue for small receptions, presentations and investitures. It is the central stone hall of the original Residence and is the oldest known European structure in Darwin.

Due to paucity of space in flats, the study room and bedroom will be the same, or used with a two-in-one concept.. In such cases the study part should have more moving space with only furniture and book shelves. The bed covers and pillow covers are to be kept tidy for the sake of hygiene and good atmosphere. Just a wash through washing machine weekly is enough for this. But the entire room to be vacuum cleaned once a fortnight and dusted.

A typical study might contain a desk, chair, computer, and bookshelves. A spare bedroom is often utilized as a study, but many modern homes have a room specifically designated as a study. Such rooms are usually located in a convenient area on the main floor of the house and may be referred to as a den, home office, or library. A study is a room in a house which is used for paperwork, computer work, or reading. Historically, the study of a house was reserved for use as the private office and reading room of a family father as the formal head of a household, but today studies are generally either used to operate a home business or else open to the whole family.

We now move to the very sensitive area, the bathrooms. The toilet, floor and wash basins are to be cleaned on a daily basis. We get many brands of cleaning material and accessories to aid this. The sink and the toilet are to be kept infection free, hence quality disinfectants that do not harm the hands and feet are to be used at frequent intervals for a healthy living. The other general cleaning like dusting the ceiling, wiping the mirrors, window panels, the shoe racks etc are also to be done periodically. In the United States, “bathroom” commonly means “a room containing a toilet”. In other countries this is usually called the “toilet” or alternatively “water closet”

The kitchen, the homemaker’s place of dwelling for 60% of the day deserves special treatment as the healthy survival of the family depends on the quality food that is being prepared from here. The toughest task indeed is the closed cabinets, which will be the paradise for ants, cockroaches and lizards. Cleaning the cabinet with insecticides is a must to prevent them from entering. The cabinet with wooden doors to be cleaned with dry cloth or with solutions which give some additional glow. The counter top and floor to be degreased and wiped/moped every day. The stainless steel vessels and the sink to be washed everyday and wiped. The gas stove, mixie, wet grinder and micro oven to be serviced periodically. The glass doors and windows to be kept tidy by periodical dusting and wiping. The refrigerator/freezer to be cleaned/defrost periodically.

Ground floor flats or independent houses may have the fortune of having small garden/lawn. Upkeep of garden gives immense satisfaction to the owner/ dweller. Watering the plants on daily basis, removing the cobwebs , weeds etc gets one rich dividend.

Nowadays we get house cleaning materials of high quality in departmental stores and also through direct marketing people. There is a growing awareness among people to use these products and pay more attention on keeping the house sparklingly clean.

There are also professional home cleaning services available in the market. People who can afford can enter into a contract and utilize their services.
